The following tip sheet on supporting neurodivergent students experiencing work avoidance has been commissioned by the Victorian Department of Education (‘the Department’) as part of its funded expansion of I CAN. This expansion involves the creation of practical resources development by the Department in partnership with I CAN which can be made available and promoted to all Victorian government schools.
The intent of this tip sheet is to support the State of Victoria’s implementation of the Autism Education Strategy and Disability Inclusion Reform, particularly the strategic pillar to ‘build the capability of school leaders and staff to meet the educational needs of autistic students’.
The below exploration of ‘work avoidance’ in neurodivergent students, including its practical tips for teachers/support staff, has been informed by I CAN professional development workshops with Victorian government school teacher audiences.
